… Vacate our forest or face the consequences

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Akeredolu has read the riot act to herdsmen committing series of crimes in the state, using forest reserves as hideout to vacate all the forests in the state within seven days or face the consequences that will follow.

Since the inception of this administration, Governor Akeredolu has been up and doing in ensuring the state is free of criminals with little success recorded.

The Governor frowned at the high rate of kidnapping and killings along major high ways across the state, adding that active measures has been put in place to tackle the threat to lives in Ondo State.

According to him, ” We have taken major steps at addressing the root cause of kidnapping, in particular, and other nefarious activities detailed and documented in security reports, the press and debriefings from victims of kidnap cases in Ondo State”.

He said report has shown that several kidnapping in the state were traceable to the activities of bad elements masquerading as herdsmen.

“These unfortunate incidents are traceable to the activities of some bad elements masquerading as herdsmen. These felons have turned our forest reserves into hideouts for keeping victims of kidnapping, negotiating for ransom and carrying out other criminal activities.

Governor Akeredolu said he will not open his eyes and allow the criminals to turn the state into kidnapping hideout, saying no hidden place for criminals for as long as he remains the Chief Law and Security Officer of the state.

“As the Chief Law and Security Officer of the State, it is my constitutional obligation to do everything lawful to protect the lives and property of all residents of the State.

” In light of the foregoing, the following orders are hereby issued: All Forest Reserves in the State are to be vacated by herdsmen within the next 7 days with effect from today, Monday 18th January, 2021 and Night-grazing is banned with immediate effect because most farm destruction takes place at night.”

Part of the orders are that movement of cattle within cities and highways is prohibited and under-aged grazing of cattle is outlawed.

He added that “In its usual magnanimity, our administration will give a grace period of seven days for those who wish to carry on with their cattle-rearing business to register with appropriate authorities.

“Our resolution to guarantee safety of lives and property within the State shall remain utmost as security agencies have been directed to enforce the ban.”
