World Teachers’ Day: Akeredolu Promises Teachers Improve Welfare Package

The popular refrain that teachers’ reward are in heaven, is an acknowledgment that they are at the wrong end of the national reward stick, as Ondo State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) joins the rest of the world to mark World Teachers’ Day.

World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5 to celebrate teachers around the globe, commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding their rights and responsibilities, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.

Celebrating the 2021 World Teachers’ Day, NUT members in Ondo State were all decked in white attire in an elaborate program held at Teachers’ House, along Oda Road, Akure.

The 2021 anniversary theme is “Teachers at the heart of Education Recovery in Nigeria, Issues and Strategies”, which was delivered by Dr. R. Ilori who speaks extensively about the noble roles of teachers in nation building.

In his welcome address, the state chairman, Comrade Victor Amoko congratulates teachers for their undying sacrifice towards building a great nation, saying the annual event is set aside to create awareness and draw attention to the plight of teachers.

In his words, ” attaining education for all is not just the responsibility of government, but also that of parents, children, philanthropists and teachers”.

The NUT boss stressed that the despite the economic challenges facing the country , Ondo State government under the leadership of able governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has been doing tremendously well in terms of recruitment of teachers, payment of salaries, renovation of schools among others.

Comrade Amoko while calling on government to bankroll future celebration, called for more infrastructural aids in schools and renovation of more schools just as he stressed that out of the total of 15,000 staff strength required across board, Ondo State has slightly above 7,000 staff strength.

” I commends the giant strides of the governor in education sector but as Oliver Twist, we are calling the attention of government for more infrastructure in our Primary schools, recruitment of addictional teachers and impressive welfare package for our teachers.

While addressing the gathering, Mr Dare Aragbaiye, Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties who stand in for the governor congratulates the teachers on this year’s celebration, assuring them of improve welfare package.

Aragbaiye disclosed that, Governor Akeredolu is passionate about the welfare of teachers in the state and will continue to do everything to boost education sector.

He said further that, the present government has invested huge amount of money in education sector, adding that hundreds of primary schools have either be renovated or constructed, building of perimeter fences, recruitment of over 1200 teachers, promotion, car loans among other incentives were given by the government to encourage teachers and teaching profession.

The Special Adviser commended the leadership of NUT in the state for always be at the forefront championing the cause of teachers in Ondo State.

Meanwhile, goodwill messages were delivered by friends of the union and different labour leaders in the state.
