Why we increase sharp sand price, fault govt bans on activities – Tipper Owners

Following the ban on the activities of members of the Association of Tippers and Quarry Owners of Nigeria over recent obnoxious increase in sharp sand price by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in Ondo State, the State President of the association has cleared air on the increment, saying government ban is taking a heat on the means of livelihood of his members.

The position of the state governor was made known at a press conference addressed by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale..

While decring the high rate of extortion by the sharp sand dealers in the state, Odebowale, said government would not allow any association to extort the people of the state. Already, members of the association have increased the price of sharp sand from N25,000 to N60,000 per load.

But Odebowale directed sharp sand dealers to revert to the old price or be ready to leave the state.

He said,”Government will no longer condone the sharp practices and would not hesitate to arrest any erring members. Governor Akeredolu will not allow the sharp sand dealers to extort money from members of the public and make things difficult for the people”

Speaking with the PATH correspondent at the State Secretariat of the association, the President, Mr Oguntayo Emmanuel faulted the misinformation by the SSA, Dr Doyin Odebowale on the N25,000 to N60,000 increment.

He said the association only increase price of sand from N20,000 to N30,000 for six Tyre lorries (10 tonnes) and from N40,000 to N60,000 for ten Tyre lorries (20 tonnes).

The President explained further that, with the intervention of Deji of Akure, the association removed N2,000 from the agreed N30,000, making six Tyre lorries to now go for N28,000.

He said the increment became necessary owning to the high cost of spare part and Tyre, cost of buying new lorries and maintenance, distance of loading sites, high price of diesel from N180 to N305 among others.

‘ Before now, six Tyre lorry that cost N4-5m is now N13-14m and ten Tyre lorry is now between N22-24m when compared to N11m cost price some years back. Our lorries travel as far as Amurin to get sand, considering the distance and high cost of diesel, there is need to increase price of sharp sand”.

He appealed to the government to lift the ban on his members activities, adding that, the leadership of the association is ready for dialogue and resolve the issues amicably with the authority.
