A massive crowd of supporters on Tuesday trooped out in Akure to demonstrate solidarity with the aspiration of Princess Omowunmi Olatunji Ohwovoriole, the first Akure woman to clinch House of Representative ticket to represent the Akure North and Akure South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The supporters, drawn from Akure North and Akure South Local Government Areas, joined the “Walk with Hon. Princess Omowunmi Olatunji Ohwovoriole” held across the city as part of activities to mobilise support for her 2027 House of Representatives ambition.

The colourful procession, which commenced in the morning, featured APC leaders, party chieftains, women and youth groups, as well as other political aspirants and supporters.

The march also made a stop at the palace of the Deji of Akure Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Aladelusi Ogunlade Odundun II, where Hon. Omowunmi and her team paid homage to the monarch and sought his support and blessings.

She was accompanied by her husband, Barrister Ohwovoriole, Hon. Sunday Olajide, Hon. Abitogun and other party leaders and supporters.
Addressing the monarch, Ohwovoriole said the massive turnout was a demonstration that the APC remained firmly rooted in Akure, dismissing speculations that the party had lost its grip on the state.

According to her, the walk was organized to create awareness and make a strong statement about the strength and readiness of the APC ahead of the forthcoming elections.

“APC means serious business from top to bottom. We will reelect our President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu because he is working. We don’t change good hands; we sustain what is good,” she said.

She expressed confidence that the APC would record a decisive victory in the coming elections, attributing the optimism to the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the growing strength of the party in Ondo State.

Hon. Omowunmi, who described herself as the first woman to emerge as an APC aspirant for the Akure North and South Federal Constituency seat, called for greater support for women seeking elective positions.

She said women should be given greater visibility and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to governance and development.

The aspirant, who was joined by other female candidates contesting seats in the State House of Assembly, said her ambition was driven by the desire to change the narrative of Akure and ensure that the constituency enjoyed stronger representation at the National Assembly.

“What Akure needs in Abuja is visibility. I will make Akure proud. I pledge my allegiance and commitment to Akure that what we have will increase and multiply,” she declared.

She also promised to prioritise issues affecting women, children, families and communities if elected, stressing that women must not only be seen but also heard in the legislative process.

Hon. Omowunmi further said genuine empowerment should go beyond the distribution of money, noting that identifying people’s needs and providing sustainable solutions remained a better approach to empowerment.

“Empowerment is not sharing money. Empowerment is identifying their needs and solving the problem, making them viable so that they can stand on their own and become resourceful,” she said.

She pledged to mentor and encourage more women to participate actively in politics and governance, adding that women should see themselves as partners with men rather than competitors.

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Ogunlade Odundun II, commended Ohwovoriole, describing her as a woman known for good representation and service.

The monarch expressed confidence in her capacity, noting that her previous experience in public service had demonstrated her commitment to effective representation.

Also speaking during the event, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Hon. Kolawole Babatunde, urged party members and supporters to remain united and vote massively for APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.

Hon. Babatunde called for greater unity and coordination among party members ahead of the 2027 elections.

The walk attracted several party leaders and chieftains from Akure North and Akure South, alongside other women aspirants in the constituency.

The event ended on a high note with an empowerment exercise, during which food items and other gifts were distributed to participants and members of the party.
