World Engineering Day: NSE Commends Akeredolu On SDG Implementation

Akure Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers has commended the governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for implementing goal 6, 7 and 9 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Ondo State.

Speaking during the 2022 World Engineering Day, the Branch Chairman of the association, Engr Ezekiel Oloruntola said the governor deserves commendation in the provision of water, infrastructure and energy in the state.

March 4th of every year was declared by UNESCO as World Engineering Day to celebrate engineers across the world and appreciate the global achievements of engineering profession.

Engr Oloruntola said the United Nations has 17 goals for Sustainable Development Goals and Ondo State has achieved a great feat in Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 9 ( Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).

The theme of this year celebration is, ” Build Back Wiser Engineering The Future”. The Topic picked by association was ” 6, 7 and 9 Sustainable Development Goals -The Journey So Far In Ondo State”.

The Chairman said Governor Akeredolu has signed Energy Law of Ondo State where there is Power Company, Electricity Regulatory Directorate with intention of ensuring efficiency in power supply.

He said further that, the present government in the state has invested much in road construction and rehabilitation across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“The Governor has signed Water Resources Bill, with a full fledged Ministry of Water Resources, a feat not common in many states of the federation. Kamumi Aketi Water Scheme was established by the government to provide drinkable water to the people of the state”.

Engr Oloruntola noted that, the association has been up and doing in ensuring proper management of waste in the state, saying the body has achieved the inclusion of Engineer in the Waste Management Authority with aims of helping identify where to collect waste, dump and recycling it.

He charged government on enforcement and sensitisation of the general public on the danger of indiscriminate dumping of refuse and sanction of whoever caught violating environmental laws.

The Guest Speaker, Engr Kehinde Temikotan said most of the businesses in the country are collapsing due to power failure and environmental decadence.

He stated that, Nigeria can only be a better place if government can enforce laws and ready to sanctioned whoever that goes against the law of the country.

Engr Temikotan enjoined engineers to join politics, saying that is the only way to ensure proper implementation, enforcement and influence better governance.

On his part, Engineer Adegite charged Waste Management Authority to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse and employ the services of engineers to design waste management techniques that will prevent wrongful dumping of refuse in the state.

He urged Engineers to design Solar Power that will generate alternative power supply to the people of the state, while advising government of Ondo State to be proactive in implementing laws guiding against indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
