Dr Ezekiel Kayode Akande, the founder and Chairman of Glow 99.1 FM Akure has revealed that, the sustainability of the Radio Station was as a result of his deep pocket, saying many Radio stations have collapsed due to poor management and I don’t Care attitude of some workers.
The Oke-Agbe born medical doctor turned media proprietor disclosed this during his courtesy call to the Secretariat of the Association of Independent Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (AINPN) in Akure.
Akande stated that, his foray into media industry is divine considering his background as a trained medical doctor, saying one of his major expressions in investment drive and service was the establishment of Glow FM.
” One of the major expressions of that commitment is Glow 99.1 FM, a radio station established in Akure to give our people a strong, independent, education, entertaining and development focused voice”.
Speaking on the resignation of some staff of the station, the CEO said they resigned due to his zero tolerance to act of indiscpline, fraudulent practice, corruption, high-handedness, dereliction of duties which didn’t go down well with some of the Staff who want to call the Shot without proper monitoring.
He added that, to give the best to the audience of the radio station, he agreed to high pay rise to one of the General Managers that once managed the station, highest in the state, despite that, he resigned because he wanted a free hand without anyone questioning his authority.
‘Based on recommendation, I gave him the Job of General Manager and agreed to all his conditions and terms but within a week of resumption, I noticed that he comes to work by 12 noon, sometimes, 2pm”.
“As a proprietor of the station, I asked him to set example for other Staff by coming to work early, but no changes and the next thing after a month, he resigned”.
“Inspite of the undoing of some of them, I didn’t sack anyone but they resigned voluntarily. Even some who have resigned want to come back but there’s no way”.
Dr Akande asked the public to be wary of one sided narrative just to paint gory picture of the ownership interference, saying if not for his deep pocket, the Station would have collapsed by now.
” I see the station staff and my domestic workers as part of my family. I prioritize their welfare above other things. When the station commenced operation, workers received their salary as early as 23-24 every month and up till today, we ensure prompt payment of their salaries”
He added, he will continue to learn on the job and listen to every meaningful advise that will help grow the station.
