Idanre’s Dream Takes Shape: Bill for Federal ICT Institute Passes Second Reading

The people of Idanre Local Government have long been advocating for a tertiary institution in their community. This desire cuts across all strata of society, from royalty to commoners. Efforts have been made individually and collectively to bring this vision to life.
A significant step forward was taken on October 31, 2023, when Hon. Festus O. Akingbaso, representing the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency, presented a bill to establish an ICT institute in Idanre, Ondo State. This development was welcomed with enthusiasm, particularly by the Kabiyesi, Owa of Idanre, Late Dr. Frederick Adegunle Aroloye during Fessy Speaks, a programme organized by Rep. Akingbaso to give feedbacks to the Constituents held at the Owa’ Palace, Idanre.
Fast forward to today, March 12, 2025, Hon. Akingbaso Festus Olanrewaju moved the motion for the Bill for the establishment of the Federal Institute of Information Communication Technology, Idanre, Ondo State (HB. 783) to be read for the second time. The bill was seconded and referred to the House Committee on Information Technology for further legislative action.
During second reading, Bills will undergo discussion, correction, amendment, and criticism and it is the most critical stage of lawmaking processes. Notably, a similar bill is being sponsored by Hon. Kareem T. Abisodun from ATISBO Federal Constituency, which will expedite the process of establishing the institute at Idanre.
The bill, as sponsored by Hon. Akingbaso, encompasses several key components:
– *Full-time courses*: The institute will offer a range of full-time courses.
– *Teaching, instruction, and training*: The proposed Federal Institute of ICT, Idanre, will provide teaching, instruction, and training.
– *Provision for appointment of Provost and administrative staff*: The bill includes provision for the appointment of the Provost and other administrative staff to manage the institute’s administrative processes.
– *Courses for students*: The institute will offer various courses for students.
The bill, listed as HB. 783, marks a significant milestone in the quest for a tertiary institution in Idanre. With the support of stakeholders and the legislative process underway, the people of Idanre are one step closer to realizing their dream.
