The immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Victor Oladele Amoko has stated that, teachers in Ondo State are under celebrated, saying their contributions to nation’s building and impact in the society are under value by the government.
Speaking at the 2025 World Teachers Day held at the Aquinas College Hall in Akure to celebrate teachers under the inspiring theme: “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”, Amoko charged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to prioritize the welfare of teachers in the state.
The event, graced by educators, union leaders, students, parents, and key stakeholders in the education sector, served as a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who shape the minds and future of the nation.
The Former Labour Leader emphasized that teachers must be celebrated as the “mothers and fathers of all professions,” and called for better societal placement and recognition.
He frowned at the poor celebration from the government saying if Ekiti State, a neighboring State can declare public Holiday and gifted best teachers cars, Ondo State should do better considering the resources accruing into the state.
Amoko called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to celebrate teachers and give better recognition to teaching profession in the future engagement while calling on teachers to endeavor to celebrate themselves without government intervention.
According to him, “World Teachers Day is once in a year, there’s nothing stopping our government from declaring a lecture free day to celebrate teachers. Beyond the award and cash given to selected teachers for recognition, government should go a step further to give something substantial, like cars to Best Teachers in the state”.
He charged Governor Aiyedatiwa to redeem the pledge of donating a bus to NUT during the official commissioning of the Lock-Up shops at the Union Secretariat in 2024.
Representing the Governor of Ondo State Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, Hon. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, said each year, World Teachers’ Day provides us a moment to pause and reflect on the priceless contributions of teachers to society,” Mr. Akinduro said. “This year’s theme reminds us that education thrives when we work together — teachers with teachers, schools with communities, and educators with government.”
A major highlight of the event was the Statewide Teacher Awards, which recognized outstanding educators from each Local Government Area for excellence in leadership, dedication, punctuality, learner performance, and school development.
State Awardees Include: Ambassador Temitope Omobola Ojoge (Akure South) – Principal, Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Fagbote Kehinde Veronica (Akure North) – Head Teacher, Ajagunna Sade Abimbola (Akoko North West) – Teacher, Ogunsan Kayode (Irele) – Teacher, Adegbami Olurmilayo Mary (Odigbo) – Head Teacher and many more across the 18 LGAs.
